LDU Quito win 3-0 on aggregate

Hernan Barcos secured LDU Quito's place in the final as his seventh goal of the tournament proved to be too much for the hosts to come back from.

Velez needed to score and were on the hunt for goals from the off. Augusto Fernandez and Fabian Cubero combined well down the right leading to a ball in to Guillerme Franco. Unmarked at the far post, he made contact on the slide but could not squeeze the ball past Alexander Dominguez.

As Velez pushed they left themselves open at the back. Paul Ambrosi and Barcos both came close to scoring a huge away goal shortly before Dominguez kept out Hector Canteros at the other end.

The Buenos Aires crowd were silenced when, just four minutes after the restart, Barcoscontrolled with his chest before lashing in a volley from Neicer Reasco’s cross. It was a vital away goal that killed off the tie as Velez now needed four goals to progress.

The hosts searched for a goal but never looked truly convinced of finding a way back. Diego Calderon almost offered a route into the game when his defensive header looped up onto his own bar with 15 minutes remaining. Enrique Gamez then missed a fantastic opportunity to double the lead with five minutes remaining but he completely mishit his effort.

The Ecuadorian side can now enjoy the other semi-final clash between Vasco da Gama and Universidad de Chile, knowing that whatever the outcome, they face a tough challenge in the final.
